York Mystery Plays

Throughout August – special short breaks available to celebrate York Mystery Plays

Bookings are still available for a brand new short break package in York which was launched to co-incide with the once-every-four-years cycle of York Mystery Plays, starting today in the city’s Museum Gardens and an important part of York’s 800th anniversary charter celebrations.

The Mystery Plays break includes two nights’ Bed and Breakfast accommodation at The Grange Hotel, one of York’s finest Regency town houses (which is located close to the Museum Gardens), one evening’s Dinner for Two in the hotel’s Ivy Brasserie, and top-price tickets to a matinee or evening performance of the Plays. The price of the break is £165 per person. Guests will stay in one of the hotel’s Grange Double Rooms, but may upgrade to a Premier Room for an additional £10pp per night.

The Grange, famous also for its “York Chocolate City Break”, is located near the Museum Gardens, York Minster and the City Walls, and is also central for York’s excellent shopping streets of Stonegate and The Shambles, and other attractions including the National Railway Museum, Fairfax House and the Jorvik Viking Centre.  Reservations for the York Mystery Plays Break are available until 27th August, and can be made by telephoning the hotel on 01904 644744. The Grange’s website can be visited at www.grangehotel.co.uk.

Notes to Editors:

York’s spectacular Mystery Plays are performed by a cast of 300 community actors in the city’s beautiful Museum Gardens amidst the atmospheric ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.   The medieval cycle of Mystery Plays has been performed by the people of York across the centuries and is a world-famous part of the city’s cultural heritage. From Creation, through the birth of Christ and his Crucifixion, to the Last Judgement, these plays form one of the greatest stories ever told!
This is the first time since 1988 that in a production of this size (with an outdoor audience of 1,400 people), the Mystery Plays will have returned to the York Museum Gardens.   More information can be found at www.yorkmysteryplays2012.com.
